Center Stage: June Preview
by Pete Dymeck
5/26/08

First, we want everyone to get acquainted with our new Center Stage series that will be debuting in the Pro Draft Guide Bi-Monthly subscription. We will also have
a huge Center Stage spread in the 2009 Prospect Preview (hitting your mailboxes in August). The Center Stage will take several games and highlight several key
prospects in those games that you need to be made aware of. With this first edition, the June Preview of Center Stage, we will focus on one August game and give
a quick, brief preview of what to expect from the Center Stage series. Before we head
into the previews, we want everyone to know that we will not feature the same school twice the
entire year.

Aug. 30 -- Alabama vs. Clemson (neutral site: Atlanta, GA)

Let's start off by mentioning that Clemson is set to give up 5 possible first day draft pick's after
the 2008 college football season. QB Cullen Harper, RB James Davis, WR Aaron Kelly, S
Michael Hamlin and S Chris Clemons could all hear their names called by the end of round two
at next year's draft. Add in the fact that the Clemson Tigers are loaded with a plethora of under-
classmen prospects, from RB C.J. Spiller and WR Jacoby Ford to DE Ricky Sapp and CB
Crezdon Butler.

Alabama is jam-packed with younger, inexperienced talent but they should be able to hold their
own with Clemson's group of experienced playmakers. Senior LB Ezekiel Knight is the leader
of the Tide's defense. Senior S Rashad Johnson could be a factor on draft board's but the big
guy on the offensive line, junior OT Andre Smith will be the focal point as time draws closer to
the underclassmen deadline to declare for the draft. Other seniors of note for Alabama include
QB John Parker Wilson, WRs Nikita Stover & Will Oakley, TE Travis McCall, OC/OG Antoine
Caldwell, OG Marlon Davis, and DE Bobby Greenwood. The only prospect we take serious is
Ezekiel Knight but in two to three years, the Tide will be chock full of elite pro prospects.

In this game, in Atlanta, the focal point will be on Alabama LB Ezekiel Knight and how he
adjusts to the balanced attack from Clemson. Knight has shown to be an effective run-stopper
but his zone coverage skills are moderate at best. Clemson's trio of WRs, Kelly, Ford, and Tyler
Grisham can purposely stretch opposing defenses in three different directions while the threat
of a delayed handoff or pitch to one of Clemson's elite RBs could be in the works. Alabama's S
Rashad Johnson will be busy as he will not come close to playing up against the line of
scrimmage, thanks to Clemson QB Cullen Harper's outstanding arm.

By witnessing how well Alabama's two prime prospects, LB Knight and S Johnson adjust to the
pressure that will be applied will be critical when evaluating these prospects. The Clemson
defense, led by a core group in the front seven will look to immobilize OT Andre Smith from
'Bama. Consider the match-up between senior DT Dorrell Scott and OC/OG Antoine Caldwell
crucial as both prospects are looking to jump from the mid-round status into the first three rounds of the draft. Clemson's experienced defensive backfield should
have their way with 'Bama's senior WRs so one can expect to see the inconsistent QB John Parker Wilson having a long day in Georgia on August 30th.
