A Day that will live in Infamy (Day 1 reflections)

It's Millen Time!

First, let me address the Detroit Lions. They already have a terrible offensive line. They swap picks, essentially, with Kansas City so the Chiefs can grab OL Branden Albert (a potential top ten pick) and then grab RT Gosder Cherilus? Cherilus is too slow to play LT (protect the QBs blind side) and he may even move over to OG. Now why?

To make matters worse, they pass on LBs like Dan Connor, Tavares Gooden, Cliff Avril, etc. to grab a 4th round prospect named Jordon Dizon. Dizon could be a solid player in the league but he doesn't project to be as good as the aforementioned LBs.

They could have made some wiser decisions.

Taking a page from Millen's book

The Washington Redskins needed a WR. They moved back into the second round and stole Devin Thomas. GREAT VALUE PICK! But, with help needed desperately at DE, OL, LB, and DB... why did they take a sure-fire bust in TE Fred Davis and then WR Malcolm Kelly? They need to redeem themselves drastically tomorrow.

Steals

Pittsburgh came away from day one with the top picks. They had steals in Rashard Mendenhall and Limas Sweed.

Arizona has to be pleased with being able to nab Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Calais Campbell.

Phillip Merling, unbelievably, slid to Miami at the top of the second round. This pick will pay off big time for the 'Phins.

Kansas City getting Glenn Dorsey, than Branden Albert, and then Brandon Flowers. GREAT DAY for the Chiefs.

Mike Jenkins to Dallas, James Hardy to Buffalo, Kenny Phillips to the Giants, DeSean Jackson to the Eagles, and Patrick Lee to the Packers were all great value picks as well.

Trash

What the heck were these team's thinking with these picks?

Carolina and Jonathan Stewart - Hello, Mendenhall is still on the board and Stewart comes from the same tree as DeShaun Foster health-wise.

Detroit Lions - see above.

Washington Redskins - see above.

Baltimore - You need a CB and you draft Ray Rice?

Tennessee - Chris Johnson in the first? A big time reach for a part-time carrier that should compliment LenDale White well.

Day Two Watch List

Mario Manningham, Early Doucet, Marcus Howard, Dan Connor, Justin King, Charles Godfrey, Cliff Avril, and Tavares Gooden will all be good value picks on the second day.

Cutting back

As you can tell, I have cut back from the blogging because of the utter madness going on in the first round.

If I projected these picks two weeks ago, I would have been fired.

"The Detroit Lions select WR DeSean Jackson..."

It is a sigh of relief for Lions fans everywhere that they didn't hear that, isn't it?

How about the Kansas City Chiefs making the play for DT Glenn Dorsey and than grabbing OG/T Branden Albert? So far, according to our grading system on both picks, the Chiefs have scored an average of 9/10.

another one liner on the Jonathan Stewart pick

How could the Panthers organization approve that pick with Mendenhall still on the board?

John Fox will be fired

After the 2008 NFL season.

Write it down.

(I am still shaking my head)

6-12

What can I say? Solid picks by all except for New England and Denver.

Jacksonville moved up for Harvey but they could have stayed put and been satisfied with Calais Campbell.

I like Mayo a lot but they didn't get great value with him.

Clady is a typical boom or bust prospect. Ahh, don't like it.

Picks 2-5 Reactions

1.2 STL is getting a steal in DE Chris Long. He is my top prospect in this draft.

1.3 ATL gets the guy we called earlier this week. We had this pick solidified and it makes a lot of sense. Ryan is a student of the game and he compares to Peyton Manning in as much as he studies film.

1.4 OAK grabs McFadden. I don't like this pick because OAK could have grabbed Dorsey but heck, does OAK still know what they are doing. They gave DT T. Kelly an uber amount of loot. Run-DMC is one heck of an athlete but he doesn't fill their needs at all.

1.5 KC gets Glenn Dorsey. DT was not a need but this is a GREAT steal for the rebuilding Chiefs.

With the first overall pick...

Miami takes OT Jake Long from Michigan.

Too much speculation

As usual, I am already getting burnt out. I will be back when the draft starts officially, unless major news breaks between now and then.

Smokescreen again

BAL is now refusing the reports that they are trying to move up to 2nd overall.

Update on Rams second overall

BAL offered its 8th overall and T. Suggs to the Rams for the 2nd overall.

Atlanta has a plethora of picks. Let's see what happens.

From Wal-Mart to Ross Dress for Less to the NFL

Jack Tatum's nephew... Bobby Tatum.

Check this out. I do not know whether or not I should be in awe of his personal struggle or to laugh out loud. Seriously, with all integrity, I do hope he succeeds and can get drafted at some point on day two of the NFL Draft.

Kiper's Haircut, Blog Rundown

How cool is this blog? It is like... totally rad.

Seriously though, how about this?

What the hell is this? It was just sent to my inbox by someone I don't know with the message "You wish you had his haircut."

Anyways, expect a lot of trading today.

I will update with thoughts and such every several picks. I will be taking notes, listening, and looking for more buzz to report to you.

We reported it first...

Thank you... you know who... for coming through.

As our source stated, it has been confirmed by other pundits that OAK is talking trade with NO.

Also, Atlanta may be trying to trade up one spot to two overall so BAL can't take Ryan.

Ozzie Newsome update

It is confirmed that Matt Ryan will be on their minds as they attempt to trade up to the 2nd overall spot to grab him.

BALTIMORE TRYING TO MOVE UP TO 2ND OVERALL

Chris Long isn't a lock whatsoever.

They want Matt Ryan. Period.

Denver rant

This is an excerpt of my rant on Footballguys.com

Denver, IMHO, hasn't drafted too well with Ted Sundquist as their GM, with the exceptions of Clinton Portis (2001, no longer a Bronco), D.J. Williams (jury still out according to some, but I like the guy), and Brandon Marshall. The jury is still out on Cutler, who looks skittish a lot of times, and TE Tony Scheffler, who may be good in the coming years.

But look at some of Sundquist's picks --- Willie Middlebrooks (1st, 2001), DE Paul Toviessi (2nd, 2001) --- Those were Sundquists first two picks as Denver's GM. He went on to draft guys like Ashley Lelie, George Foster, Quentin Griffin, Maurice Clarett, Marcus Thomas.

From 2001-2007, under Sundquist, Denver did have three 10+ win seasons, plus acquired Champ Bailey and Dre Bly, but he also brought in the Cleveland Browns frontline.

Things will look up from here for Denver with Sundquist out of the picture in my opinion. With Kuper and Harris at OT, Denver should look at another position. Maybe Jerod Mayo if they truly intend to move DJ Williams back to the outside.

Mendenhall, one year wonder?

Just because other scouts overlooked RB Rashard Mendenhall in 2006, it doesn't mean that he was a one year wonder. A lot of scouts, including myself, regarded Mendenhall rather highly after watching him ripoff 141 yards against Penn State in 2006. A Penn State defense that consisted of three stud linebackers, Paul Posluszny, Dan Connor, and Sean Lee.

Hey major suits, just because you overlooked him doesn't mean that he was a one-year wonder. Face it, you missed on him as a top junior RB until later on in 2007.

Fumbilitis Smokescreen

Oakland finished 5th in rushing last year with Justin Fargas as their primary ball carrier. They restructured Dominic Rhodes' deal and still roster super-sleeper Michael Bush. LaMont Jordan is still a Raider but he is very unhappy. BUT, why would Oakland address this area when they do not need to.

I see a smokescreen.

ESPN has whiffed a lot but they have gotten a lot of picks right too. One partner said that this is possibly a smoke screen.

RUN-DMC is from Queens not Oakland...

Well not really. Those that follow hip-hop know what I am talking about.

ESPN is reporting that McFadden will go to Oakland.

BPA

BPA - Best Player Available.

Teams sitting at the mid-to-late part of round 1 could be taking BPA over need, technically.

For example, Philadelphia could go with a CB (a need, but not as much as an OT, WR) if Rodgers-Cromartie some how falls to them.

Washington is a team that could follow along the lines of BPA. Same with Pittsburgh and even Seattle, despite talk of Seattle bolstering their offense.

Trade Rumor with Oakland at four

With Glenn Dorsey expected to slide into the fourth pick, Oakland is contemplating dealing that pick for more picks as they don't have any 2nd or 3rd round picks.

New Orleans seems to be involved in every trade talk, so expect their name to come up amidst this speculation.

Draft Weekend Special

We just want to remind everyone that if they get a 1-year subscription to our Bi-Monthly, they will receive a free Pro Draft Guide t-shirt AND a free copy of the 2008 Prospect Preview.

The Prospect Preview gives a detailed breakdown on who to watch this coming college football season as we prepare, months ahead, for the NFL Draft.

Mock Draft will be wrong but...

So be it. With a 50/50 chance that the Rams take either Chris Long or Glenn Dorsey, no one knew what would happen. It appears that Mel Kiper, Sigmund Bloom, Tony Conty will be right on with the Chris Long pick but myself, Matt MacCoy, and others went with Glenn Dorsey.

Things could change back to my favor as I am just one of the few that have Atlanta passing on the coveted DT from LSU and drafting QB Matt Ryan (the anti-Vick) to be their franchise QB.

Word from the green room is that Atlanta will likely draft Matt Ryan.

More updates

Besides the Long pick, it is looking like Atlanta will go in the direction of QB Matt Ryan, according to a source.

What happens next will be intriguing as Oakland will have the option of Glenn Dorsey, Darren McFadden, or Vernon Gholston.

Kansas City is also looking to trade out of the fifth spot.

Despite earlier reports, the Saints may not be in the running for Lito Sheppard after all. This all hinges on their chances to draft Glenn Dorsey, Sedrick Ellis, or Keith Rivers. Of course, they may have to trade up (maybe with New England) to snag one of those three.

Live Draft Coverage

We have received word that the Rams will select DE Chris Long from Virginia at the 2nd overall spot.

Friday Night News Special

West Texas A&M Tight End Kolo Kapanui may be looked at as a possible convert to the offensive line.

Several, I repeat, several established writers and insiders are saying that WR Donnie Avery could go as high as the end of the first round. Avery hails from Houston. He saw his stock increase dramatically after the season. He fronts as a returner also. We have him going in the early third in our latest mock draft but have had him as high as the middle of the second round. We did however, place Avery as the 6th best WR on our final rankings list, ahead of Early Doucet, Malcolm Kelly, Jordy Nelson, Andre Caldwell, and others.

We have heard that S Thomas DeCoud (pronounced DAY-koo) is rising back up the boards. We don't agree with it and contacted one writer from the Mercury News in Silicon Valley to find out that DeCoud could slide into the 5th round. We look at him as a third or fourth rounder.

Colorado LB Jordon Dizon will go a lot higher than expected.

S Kenny Phillips will not fall out of the first round. Several teams would love to have him on their roster.

QB Brian Brohm may actually go after Joe Flacco and Chad Henne. I am almost willing to bet on this.

Well, we are 16 and 1/2 hours away from the NFL Draft. Tune back in tomorrow morning for news and insider updates as they break.

Draft Weekend Special

Everybody that subscribes to our Bi-Monthly for one year will not just win a free Pro Draft Guide t-shirt, they will also be set to receive a free copy of the 2008 Prospect Preview.

We may not be batting 1.000 but...

we are making up for everything as we find the errors. Just to let everyone know, please contact us if you come across an error on the website. We went through a lot this week with our former company screwing us to the point of annhilation in the biggest week of the year for us. Unfortunately, we will not be taking legal action. It won't be worth it.

Thanks again for everyone's support.

Who wants some golf clubs?

What is up people?

We are coming up on the NFL Draft, tomorrow at 3pm EST.

Just a reminder... You can enter the 2008 Draft Contest for FREE! That is right, for filling out a FREE FORM and guessing answers about the draft, you could win a $50 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods. Yeah, who wants some new golf clubs? I will be honest. We don't have as many participants as I expected so hurry up and join. The deadline will be 1pm EST tomorrow!

Also, we have some friends in high places this year. Karl Malone's son is hoping to get drafted (OT Demetrius Bell, Northwestern State (La.), Former DE Mike Rucker's brother (TE Martin Rucker), S Dominique Barber from Minnesota is RB Marion Barber's brother. For the full spread on these family connections, click here.

I think our mock draft is going to be off somewhat, but, so be it. I expect so many trades to happen this year. We almost forgot to add QB Joe Flacco to the mock draft. As for some surprise picks, expect them to happen. Don't be fooled to see teams like Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Green Bay draft running backs this weekend. And by draft RBs, we mean known RBs with high upside.

Anyways, that is it for this morning. Hurry up and go get some golf clubs!

We are getting closer...

Well, folks, the draft is another day closer. Speculation continues to run rampant, shows continue to air draft specials, and we continue to talk buzz.

One of the latest tidbits comes from PFT where they say Matt Ryan could slide all the way to Kansas City at 17th overall. We can envision this happening as a month ago, we had Matt Ryan falling into the twenties of our mock draft.

Also, it appears that San Francisco is set to take a former Oregon Duck WR late in the draft. Can anyone tell me who?

Dan Connor appears to be a lock to go to San Francisco unless someone clips Mike Nolan's wings before his second round pick. Imagine that LB corps in San Fran, with Manny Lawson, Patrick Willis, Quentin Groves, and Dan Connor (in no specific order). Amazing.

One surprising tidbit that we heard is that the Eagles could trade down, not up, if they can't get their hands on a certain, unnamed prospect. Interesting. They did this last year with QB Kevin Kolb. HC Andy Reid really is stubborn, isn't he?

For all of you mock draft "guru's", stop putting a WR in at Tampa Bay's spot. Write it down. They will not draft a WR in the first round, according to multiple sources that have yet to let us down.

April 22, 2008

Wednesday, Thursday,

Friday... Saturday! That's right folks, the draft is right around the corner. Before we get too antsy, let me welcome you to the Pro Draft Guide Draft Day Blog. On draft day, I will comment on each and every pick, plus give you the buzz that I am hearing while the draft is going on. That's right, I will be bringing you the draft live from your computer.

As for Jake Long... we can get the comments for the first pick out of the way. Miami is making a wise decision with this pick. Despite liking DE Chris Long better, I can't complain. Long may not be ready to play immediately at left tackle, in similar fashion to Levi Brown from a year ago, but he will be able to transition in no time with the proper coaching. This only makes you wonder about which direction Miami will go with their two second round picks. They still need a lot of help, especially at QB, but you have to think that if Chad Henne is on the board with the first pick of the second round, that Miami will take him.

Now how about the draft blog logo we made (at the top of the page). What we did was take the 1997 NFL Draft logo and edited into our own little logo. We like the concept of going retro at times. Remember, 1997 was the year that OT Orlando Pace went first overall to the St. Louis Rams. With Jake Long being projected to go first, and then signing with Miami, we only found it fitting that we rework the 1997 draft logo. Also, remember that DE Darrell Russell went second overall that year. We will likely see a DE, whether it is Chris Long or Vernon Gholston, go second overall again this year. 1997, only one quarterback went in the first round (Jim Druckenmiller). We could see that again. Basically, the aforementioned notes are why we chose to use the 1997 draft logo because that draft was similar to what we are expecting to happen in this year's draft.

Well, I will be back later... but remember, all day long Saturday and Sunday, I will be live updating you with commentary on each and every pick, as well as letting you know some inside buzz about some backdoor talk from all of the pro franchises.

Tuesday Night Update

I received an eery e-mail asking me what I am working on. Weird huh? Want my digits? Well, I am updating the mock draft... it should be available some time after midnight or tomorrow morning.

I will then only have one more update to make on the mock draft, and that will be Saturday morning. I can not wait. It will be like removing several boulders off of my shoulder... until next year because for real, I am all mocked out. This year, it hasn't been easy either. In previous years, you knew what was going to happen. This year, we don't (minus the Jake Long pick).

St. Louis could trade out. Oakland could trade out. Kansas City could trade out. NY Airplanes could trade out. Belicheat's squad could trade out. Yes folks, this is why I am pulling my hair out!

Sorry for the Belicheat reference.

Also, some high ranking analyst on ESPN is assuming that Vernon Gholston could slide to the end of the top ten or so. I highly doubt it. Why? His numbers and physical traits are too "eye-popping" for any number of teams picking in the top 7 to pass on him. St. Louis through New England all need pass rushers.

Hey guy, get things straight, you are a suit that lost your passion for identifying the real facts!

Also, if this blog becomes popular, we may eliminate the articles and keep them strictly for the Bi-Monthly subscription and work solely through blogs for the free content.

I am also exploring the realm of podcasts. I am getting facts thrown to me about them, facts like demographics and such. That can wait. Until mid-summer. If anyone can come up with a catch name for the Pro Draft Guide Podcasts... I will give you a free year's subscription to the Bi-Monthly.

More updates on the server meltdown.

Here is what happened. I tried to run some updates through the News Center and all of a sudden, I couldn't access the server. Why? It said I needed to contact billing. WHAT!?!?! I screamed! Well, they complained that I was running odd scripts and hogging all of the CPU space. Huh? Well, to no delay, I switched to Yahoo! Small Business Solutions and everything has been fine, except for losing some valuable content.

Mr. Irrelevant contest is still on. E-mail me at petedymeck@yahoo.com with your guess for Mr. Irrelevant. Remember, the winner will win a Reebok Premier EQT jersey. YOU PICK THE JERSEY!

I am done with the forums I believe. May they rest in peace.

As for Shaun Alexander. He will land on his feet somewhere as a 3rd down back. For a bigger back, he wasn't ever a very powerful runner despite his high number of touchdowns. His high number of TDs misconstrue the fact that he simply wasn't that good of a goal line back. Look for a team like Philadelphia, Miami, New England, Buffalo, or Detroit to look into Shaun Alexander.

Chad Johnson should just sit out. He needs to think about what he is saying some times. I have been telling some close associates for some time now that I think Ocho Cinco has hit his peak.

I have gotten numerous e-mail's about my distaste for Jonathan Stewart. It is nothing personal but I think he will slide into the mid second round like LenDale White did a couple of years ago. Not for the same reasons, well kind of but not really, but because teams have learned from that RB above (Shaun Alexander) plus Kevin Jones, et all that foot injuries are no joke. I said it once and I will say it again, if someone gives J-Stew 1st round money, they are throwing it away. This is not for shock value either.

Another issue that I need to address is the Detroit Lions. I have received several humurous e-mails from "scouts, writers, and insiders" stating that I have no idea what I am doing with their picks in my mocks. Basically, it is almost a mute point to argue over 2nd and 3rd rounders. My last (soon to be outdated) mock had the Lions taking Aqib Talib in the 2nd. THEY NEED SECONDARY HELP! HE IS A STEAL THERE! Sorry. Detroit will look hard at DBs in this draft... I bet my watch on it. As for their third round pick, I had them taking Andre Woodson. Sorry, but Drew Stanton would be a 6th round pick in this year's class and this year's class is nothing to write home about. Aghh... too bad I do not have enough time to answer every e-mail but I DO truly appreciate everyone's opinion and it does have an effect on my mocks. FOR YOUR DETROIT fans, you may like my latest update better.

Like Porky Pig, That's all folks!
